Inspect the lid switch.

When your Whirlpool washer door won’t open, the most likely issue is a faulty lid switch. The lid switch has a striker that needs to work correctly to release and hold the door. The door might stay locked and won’t open when it becomes faulty.

Follow this procedure to inspect the lid switch.

  1. Unplug/turn off your washer.
  2. Locate the lid switch. If you need to know where it is, check your user manual.
  3. Make sure the lid switch is securely aligned. If it’s loose or misaligned, replace the entire unit if needed.
  4. If the lid switch is secure and aligned, disconnect its wires and use a multimeter to test for continuity.
  5. Inspect the actuator motor to see if the lid switch passes the test and works correctly. If it fails, replace it.

You Need To Inspect the actuator motor.

After installing the new lid switch, check if the problem has been solved. If not, inspect the actuator motor. Another possible cause of your Whirlpool washer door not unlocking is a faulty actuator motor.

Before we test the motor with a multimeter, the first thing to do is turn on your washer cycle. If you hear a loud grinding noise, the motor is faulty, and you must replace it with a new one.

  1. You hear no noticeable noises from the motor. Unplug/turn off the washer.
  2. Locate the actuator motor.
  3. Once located, ensure that wires that are attached to the motor are securely connected to the motor.
  4. If the wires are correctly connected, test the motor using a multimeter.
  5. If the multimeter shows continuity, the motor works perfectly.
  6. You need to replace the motor.

After replacing the motor, the issue still needs to be solved. Then, you need to check the drain pump.

You Need To Inspect the drain pump.

The drain pump can be another component that can cause the washer’s door not to open. If the drain pump becomes faulty, your washer cannot drain the water.

Follow the steps to check a faulty drain pump.

  1. The first step is to power off/ unplug your washer.
  2. Locate the drain pump.
  3. Disconnect the drain pump.
  4. Check the drain pump for continuity using a multimeter.
  5. It works perfectly if it passes the test, so you must replace the main control panel.
  6. If the drain pump doesn’t show continuity, you must replace it.
  7. After replacing the drain pump, the problem should solved. If not, consider replacing the main control board.

You Need To Replace the Main Control Board.

If you’re having trouble with your Whirlpool washer door not unlocking, it may be caused by a faulty main control board.
